We accept all formats and material types, including books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more. We are limited by available equipment and currently cannot digitize large scale objects, such as maps. We also cannot digitize three-dimensional objects or ephemera.
Awards are limited by the availability of Library Services and Technology Act funding. While reviewing nominations, we give preference to new partners, as well as to organizations and collections that reflect communities who traditionally have been underrepresented in the historical narrative of California. We also encourage local organizations to collaborate in this process by helping each other with cataloging, sharing shipping costs, and/or promoting the collections together after digitization.
California Revealed prefers to digitize on a collection- or series-level. Please nominate all items in a collection or series for consideration as we would like to keep collections together.
Collections nominated for digitization should consider the following selection criteria:
- Statewide and/or local historical significance that contributes to an understanding of the history of California and its diverse populations
- Risk of loss or damage due to physical condition
- Risk of loss due to format obsolescence
- Titles most requested by users
Nominations must include, when possible:
- Minimum required description
- Intellectual property rights in the public domain, held by the owning institution, or secured from the rights holder
In general, the following content should be excluded:
- Institutional history, unless the content has statewide and/or local historical significance
- Material duplicates or heavily overlaps material that has already been digitized, unless the source provided is a higher resolution version
