Monterey Museum of Art

Collection Description

The Monterey Museum of Art cultivates curiosity in the visual arts and engages community with the diversity of California art – past, present, and future.

This collection contains oral interviews with California artists (and their families) and photographers who were influential in creating the vibrant art communities centered in the Monterey Peninsula (including Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur) following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.  Artist interviews were conducted in the 1960’s by Betty Lochrie Hoag McGlynn on behalf of the Carmel Museum of Art (now closed).  Photographer interviews were conducted in the late 1990’s-early 2000’s by Professor Donald R. Anderson for his Monterey Peninsula College course on the history of California photography.  All interviews include first-hand accounts and stories about numerous California artists and photographers besides those named in the title.
