Description
The Greek-American Oral History Project documents the historical experiences of immigrant Greeks and first-generation Greek Americans in the Sacramento region. Interviewees discuss events dating back to the turn of the twentieth century, including memories relating to the immigration experience, family life, the development of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, and the social life of the Greek-American community. Ongoing interviews are focused on the unchronicled experiences of Greeks in California agriculture, particularly in the Central Valley. Nick Kamilos was born in Piraeus, Greece in October 16,1934. His mother Mary Annanthe Kamilos was born in Lixouri, Kefallonia in 1904. His father, Gerry Kamilos, was also born in Lixouri, Kefallonia. He came to the United States in 1908 where he worked in the mines in Lincoln, California. He later opened his first market in Sacramento in 1915. In 1931, he then opened an import/export company with one office in Piraeus, Greece where he met his wife. As a family, they settled in California in 1936. During school, Nick worked at restaurants, grocery stores, and in the Sacramento public market.
