We're hiring! Digital Services Librarian/Digital Preservation Assistant

In partnership with over 350 libraries, archives and museums (and growing), California Revealed helps public libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and other heritage groups digitize, preserve, and provide online access to materials documenting the state’s history, art, and cultures. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections, including technical advice and guidance, for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs.  

We gather the best archival practices for digitization and digital preservation, establish low-cost, practical standards, then manage digitization, online access, and digital preservation activities on behalf of partner organizations. Free public access is provided for teaching, study, and enjoyment. In addition, records are shared with Calisphere, WorldCat, the Digital Public Library of America, and the Home Movie Registry. California Revealed is grant-funded by the California State Library. Program operations are located at the California State Library in Sacramento.  

We have an open Digital Services Librarian position available with a contract that will run through June 30, 2023, with the opportunity for renewal, dependent upon available funding. This is structured as an onsite position, with remote work possible, as needed. The team follows the California Department of Public Health Guidelines when onsite.  

This position is open until filled and begins immediately. The first review of applications will begin July 22, 2022. Hiring is contingent on Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget approval. 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

The Digital Services Librarian will assist with the accessioning, file normalization, online access, and long-term preservation of digital collections on behalf of program partners. The Digital Services Librarian will report to the Digital Preservation Manager.  

The Digital Services Librarian will help support the following activities:    

  • Assists with workflow and metadata coordination for preservation and long-term access of digital collections submitted by partner organizations. 

  • Standardizes metadata for ingest into a content management system in compliance with program-specific metadata guidelines according to the Dublin Core or PBCore metadata schema. 

  • Uploads, maps, and aggregates metadata.  

  • Performs quality assurance and control of digital files and metadata records for ingest into the California Revealed Digital Repository.    

  • Corresponds with partners and offers guidance regarding selection, description, and preparation of digital materials for ingest into the California Revealed Digital Repository.    

  • Contributes to development of the California Revealed Digital Repository and public access site, californiarevealed.org.    

  • Curates exhibits, themes, and coordinates metadata improvements to enhance discoverability of the California Revealed collections. 

  • Checks metadata harvests for Calisphere, Digital Public Library of America, and WorldCat.    

  • Participates on the Outreach Committee. Reaches out to new partners, regularly posts to California Revealed's social media, and contributes to seasonal newsletter, and assists with the development of digital preservation workshops, webinars, and other outreach projects. 

  • Participates on the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Evaluation Committee and helps to implement goals of the California Revealed EDI Evaluation. 

  • Represents California Revealed at professional conferences and meetings.    

  • Other duties as assigned.   

 

Required  Capabilities and Experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field.   

  • Working knowledge of library and archives preservation principles, including digitization and metadata standards for long-term preservation and access.   

  • Experience with cataloging, handling, and preservation of archival materials, particularly for digital materials.   

  • Experience with quality assurance and control procedures for digitized archival materials, including manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials.   

  • Demonstrated understanding of archival arrangement and description. Knowledge of current and emerging library and information standards such as MARC, PBCore, Dublin Core, MODS, Encoded Archival Description, and various thesauri for cataloging.   

  • Familiarity with digital asset management systems and repositories.   

  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently, in an environment where consultation, flexibility and cooperation are essential.   

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud products such as Lightroom, Premiere Pro, and Audition for quality control.   

  • Comfortable with MS Office applications in Mac environments, particularly Excel.   

  • Strong analytical, documentation, and written/verbal communication skills.   

 

Preferred Capabilities and Experience 

  • Interest in California history. 

  • Experience using command line interfaces such as Terminal.  

  • Experience with markup languages, such as XML, JSON and YAML.  

  • Experience with Shell scripting. 

 

Compensation 

$30-35/hour, depending on skills and experience. 32-40 hrs/week. Annual independent contract (1099), with subsequent contracts dependent upon available funding. This position is open until filled and begins immediately.
