Educator Fellowship

California Revealed (CA-R), in partnership with the California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP), invites California educators to apply for the Educator Fellowship program. This is a special opportunity for K-12 educators to research and create curricular materials in history and the social sciences using CA-R’s digital collections, of which sound and moving images are especially vast.

Meet our 2022/2023 Fellows!

Learn about Virginia Nguyen's experience as an Educator Fellow in this interview by Tuyen Tran, Assistant Director of CHSSP. Virginia Nguyen shares perspectives on the transformative impact educators can have in reshaping curriculum narratives. The interview is a culmination of our inaugural Educator Fellowship, a collaboration between California Revealed and the California History-Social Science Project. Explore Virginia's inquiry set, Reflections on Vietnamese American Identity.

Application Information

The 2023/2024 Educator Fellowship Application is now closed.

CA-R will support two Educator Fellowships for service between February 1, 2024 through June 28, 2024. The fellowships carry a stipend of $3,000 for approximately 60-80 hours of research and curriculum development. In addition, travel support will be provided by CHSSP following the completion of the curriculum. CA-R will provide archival research support, and CHSSP will provide content and pedagogical mentorship.

Applications are especially welcome from K-12 classroom teachers and school librarians who specialize in history, ethnic studies, and social sciences. Within the application, prospective Educator Fellows must describe a research plan that identifies a content area for further study using CA-R's online collections. Some examples include the Latinx experience during the Great Depression, California’s farm laborers, and place-based community culture or traditions. The applicant will propose a curriculum development plan that integrates the primary sources and findings of the research project within a K-12 classroom by creating  primary source sets, lessons, and other instructional materials. Applicants are encouraged to browse the CA-R online collections to determine whether the research plan will be feasible.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Teach California or U.S. History in a California elementary, middle, or high school.
  • Commit approximately 60-80 hours to working with California Revealed and the CHSSP to develop, implement, and promote educational resources, including two document sets, between February 1, 2024 and June 28, 2024.
  • These hours will include collaborative online meetings with CHSSP and California Revealed. Hours will vary and work can be completed remotely.
  • Support dissemination efforts beyond the project period, such as piloting instructional materials and presenting at conferences and other professional learning opportunities.

Please apply using the 2023/2024 Educator Fellowship Application Form.

Each set should include 5-7 primary and secondary sources directly related to the area of study and the following:

  • An introduction and overview of the topic and its significance (1-2 pages)
  • A list of applicable content standards and curriculum frameworks (History-Social Science, English Language Arts, English Language Development) and the Common Core State Standards.
  • A list of possible inquiry questions that would give purpose to the documents for classroom instruction.
  • An annotated bibliography with proper citations, as well as:
    • An image and descriptions of each source for ADA compliance;
    • Rationale for the inclusion of each source -- of its historical significance or educational value;
    • Transcriptions of sources and/or excerpts, including handwritten notes and typed text;
    • 2-3 suggestions for classroom instruction, such as literacy strategies, historical investigations, civic action projects, and community engagement activities; and
    • Related urls for further exploration and study.
  • Short videos for classroom use and/or social media post(s)

All written work must be submitted by June 28, 2024, followed by dissemination during Summer/Fall 2024. Fellows will work with CA-R and CHSSP to make their materials available to the public through online publication at partner websites. Fellows will also participate in a recorded panel or online presentation reflecting upon their fellowship experience.
