Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. When the earthquake occurred, Don Steiger was an Associate Transportation Planner for the Advanced Transportation System Development program. In this interview he discusses his personal experience of the earthquake in the Sunset district of San Francisco and also the effect the earthquake had on his work following the disaster. Don also explains setting up an emergency hotline of planning and transit information for commuters affected by route and bridge closures.
