Mary Poeton Helsley Interview
Created Date
April 25th, 1991
Description
Key Words: Claremont Churches, Pomona College
Mary Poeton Helsley was born Bangor, Maine, where her father, Josiah Poeton, attended a Christian seminary. Because her father spoke French fluently, he served in France during the First World War. During the War, her mother moved their family to Claremont
her father joined them in 1921 after he finished his service with the French government. She attended Pomona College, where she studied English, Spanish, and French. Josiah Poeton organized a number of organizations, Bible studies, and even a boy scouts troop in Claremont. After her husband passed away, she moved into Pilgrim Place to serve as a house mother for a home of elderly women. She remembers several Claremont businesses from when she was younger, including a shoe store, a children’s dress shop, and a ten-cent store. She remembers going caroling on Christmas Eve in Claremont.
