Description
Documentary on California photographer Marion Patterson, who studied under Minor White, Dorothea Lange, and Ansel Adams. A collection of her photographs titled Grains of Sand was published in 2002. Patterson's photographs focus on the natural surroundings of the central California coast, the Sierras, and the deserts of the Southwest. She describes her work as “photographs of the intimate landscape, simple and contemplative like a zen garden.” Produced by First Generation (1974 -1980), a partnership between Dede Tisone Bartels, Betty Estersohn, and Joan Valdes, who were young teachers and artists in the San Francisco Bay Area of the 1960s and 70s. It was a vibrant and creative art community that was pushing the boundaries and the definition of art. The common denominator between the three was an interest in the possibilities of the new technology of video to document the work of people who created California and Bay Area history.
