Portrait, Dertad Tookoian, with violin. Studio stamp, Balkanyi, Photo Studio, [2232?] W. Jefferson Ave, Detroit (Mich.). Tookoian was born in 1906 in the village of Kessrig, Karpert, Turkey. He was one of a handful of survivors of the Armenian Genocide from his family. He initially immigrating to Watertown (Mass.) and later settled in Detroit (Mich.), where he formed Dertad's Band (later, Ararat Band). Dertad moved to Fresno (Calif.) in the 1960s where occasionaly played his clarinet for small gatherings.
