Remnants: Frumkin, Weisburd, Bill Baily Etc., Coastlines Party--June 21 Stanley and Mel. Eskew & Co.
Date Created
June 21st, 1900s
Description
This recording is from the personal collection of the poet Mel Weisburd, who during the 1950s was the editor of the influential journal of California poetry, Coastlines. Accounts of California poetry of the time now increasingly identify the group of poets associated with the journal (a circle dubbed the “Coastliners" by Weisburd) as an important alternative to the more visible Beat communities of San Francisco and Venice. Weisburd avidly sought to document the poetry activity of Los Angeles in the 50s, which recorded a number of legendary happenings and readings. The labeling of this recording indicates that it documents one of several literary parties held in the late 1950s by the circle associated with Coastlines. The parties often featured readings and discussions by key poets such as William Pillin, and were often held in the Malibu home of Alexandra Garret. This party in particular had poetry readings from Mel Weisburd and Gene Frumkin, who was also an editor of Coastlines, as well as Stanley Kiesel, a fellow "Coastliner," poet, playwright and novelist. Also present was Thomas McGrath, an unofficial leader of this group. And, among other musicians referred to as "Eskew and Co." there was Bill Bailey, who we believe to be William Sunland Bailey. Bill had a successful music career in his own right in the LA and Palm Springs areas.
