Description
Taped at UC Davis Edgewise Festival. June Watanabe (b. 1939) has created contemporary dance theater works and collaborated with distinguished artists from diverse disciplines including taiko master Seiichi Tanaka and the Kronos Quartet, visual artists like Ruth Asawa and Sandra Woodall, and choreographers Remy Charlip, Alonzo King, and Ed Mock. Her work incorporates and illuminates the Japanese American experience and explores ritualistic formalities, and womanhood. She is the recipient of the NEA's US Japan Friendship Commission's Creative Arts Fellowship and numerous other residencies, grants, and commissions. Her internment works have been used to teach students and the general public about the relocation and displacement of Japanese Americans during WWII. This performance feature George Yoshida's J-Town Jazz Ensemble.
