Description
Issei female, born on July 1, 1906. Her father was already in American in 1923 when Hana, her mother, sister and brother came to join him as Yobiyose (""one who is called""). In 1926, at the age of twenty, she married Kuichi Kodama and settled on a Florin farm purchased under someone elses name. They grew strawberries and grapes but lost their property when they failed to pay off the mortgage. In 1942, when Hana was thirty-six, the family went first to Fresno Assembly Center, then to Jerome, Arkansas where their sixth child was born. After internment the family returned to the Sacramento area but did not find appropriate jobs. The family moved to San Francisco where Hana was a dressmaker and worked twenty-four years at the Japan Food Corporation. Mr. Kodama was a custodian and house cleaner until illness overtook him. They worked hard to raise their children and see them all into college.
