Description
Nisei female, born on April 19, 1905 in Mayfield, California (now Palo Alto). Although one of few Japanese in the area, her family influenced her strong Japanese values. She took private Japanese language classes, had an arranged marriage, assumed care of her parents-in-law, raised children, was a wage earner and converted to Buddhism. In 1942 when Shizuko was thirty-seven, her family was sent to Fresno Assembly Center, then Gila River, Arizona. The family returned to central California where Shizuko worked in a market.
