Description
Born in 1921, Helen Caparis was the eldest child of Greek immigrants Vasileki and George Manolis. Her parents were from Arcadia. Her mother, Vasileki Kolanzopolis was born in 1894 in Tripolis. Her father George Manolis, born 1884, came from a village outside of Tripolis. At the turn of the century, George moved to the United States for the first time and worked for the railroad in Omaha. He later settled in Sacramento, working in the hotel business. He returned to Greece around 1910, when he met Vasileki. Together, they moved to Sacramento, California in 1920 and started their family. Helen grew up in Sacramento, completed high school in 1939 and later worked for Social Security as a recorder and translator.
