Reel 1: Interviews related to the Cardinal light airplane crash on August 4, 1966
Segment 1 (sound): Interview with pilot of airplane. Reporter: "When did you first realize you were in trouble on the way down?" "As I was making the final approach, I checked in with the tower, and was cleared to land. In the process of checking my instruments picked up a fuel fluctuation on the fuel pressure. And at that time I checked the tank I was flying on, and it read zero. Now, between the time I started my approach and the time that I caught this, I somehow had used 3/10 of the gas, which is a very large amount of gas. At that time I was over downtown San Jose and in order to avoid the downtown area, where there was no place to go, I deviated to the right. I picked up a heading of 310 degrees, and headed off to the right of the runway, knowing that there are 2 open fields there. I didn't know how long I would be able to fly, and as it turned out, I was able to make the first of the two fields." Reporter: "This, then, would probably answer the storied that you were far off course --" "I was definitely off course to the right, but I did it deliberately so that I wouldn't run the possibility of running into the congested area downtown." Reporter: "Cardinal has -- according to your information, your knowledge at the time, when you took off you had more than enough gasoline to get up there and get back." "That's right, I had in excess of 3 and a half hours of fuel."
Segment 2 (sound): Interview with man regarding fueling airplane. "When we requested that the gas be put in the airplane on the evening of August 3rd, they had filled the gas tank supposedly on the airplane and so we went over and paid this gas receipt, and we got a ticket for 122 gallons of gas. And so we felt that the airplane was probably gassed properly; to our knowledge it was. So then at a later date, about 2 days later I believe it was -- Saturday I believe it was, possibly Friday -- they called me and said they had --" Reporter: "Who is they, sir?" "The city gas boys -- had called me and said they had made a mistake on the gas ticket that they had issued on the night of the 3rd, and there was a correction on the gas, they had only put 110 gallons of gas." Reporter: "They'd put in 110 rather than 122." "That's right." Reporter: "Do you know if the plane was gassed at Tahoe, or was a gas stop made after they came back over the hills?" "To my knowledge, there wasn't any gas stop made."
Segment 3 (sound): Continuation of interview with Cardinal pilot. Reporter: "To your knowledge, at the time of the landing, at the time of the crash, was the plane out of gas?" "To my knowledge, I was having fuel difficulties, and at that time I realized that I was running low on fuel." Reporter: "How much gasoline would you normally burn on a flight to Tahoe?" "Flight to Tahoe, normally I'd burn roughly 90, 95 gallons...total return."
Reel 2:
Segment 1 (sound): Interview with man outside on tarmac at airport, with PSA boarding stairs behind him. "It appears they were trying either to try and shift the blame to try and get their case back. I did read it. I am familiar with the fueling and the tanks were filled as per their request. We have their original request, the fact as to whether or not a clerical error was made in the original billing is certainly of no import. The tanks were requested to be filled, they were -- if they weren't filled that is the responsibility of the pilot. However, the tanks were filled as requested and I think that is the important thing. I noticed in their press release they didn't even say that they were not. And they were filled. Yes, of course they could have purchased gas at Reno, Tahoe -- Sacramento Valley was open, in fact the Livermore Valley was open that morning -- they could have purchased there if they wished. As to why I couldn't say. I would have no reason as to why they didn't purchase gas."
Segment 2 (color, silent): Close-up of sign for Robert Welch Park City of San Jose. Eagle Scouts raising flag on flagpole, then shaking hands with former San Jose mayor Robert J. Welch in a suit wearing glasses and a bow tie. A group of young children is seated on the grass next to the flag pole.
Reel 3:
Segment 1 (silent): Firefighters working on putting out a fire at a residence. Shots of burnt out automobiles in the garage.
Segment 2 (silent): Close-up of Board of Supervisors Chambers sign. Supervisors meeting in chambers, with audience. Several people, men and women, giving remarks at the podium. They appear to be Latino.
Segment 3 (silent): Small group of male golfers at a golf course smiling for the camera, then taking shots individually.
Reel 4 (silent + sound): Silent footage of two conference tables with people seated opposite each other, one table with nurses' representatives, and the other presumably representing hospitals. Followed by interview of man outside a building. "The entire proceedings were very cordial in every way. We concluded the study of all of these 25 items by about 1 o'clock and agreed to have a further meeting which is now scheduled for Tuesday morning of August 16th at 9 o'clock at the Hyatt House. During this interval of time, the nurses will consider the modifications that we have suggested on their proposal. They will, we hope, offer some modifications of their own proposals that they submitted to us. We hope to eventually in this manner arrive at a complete total picture of what the cost factor is going to be. Wages, I know, is a very important question, and this was discussed. But because of the uncertainties with respect to the fringe items that are also money items, cost items, it was impossible to, at this time, crystallize the cost picture. So we hope to be able to do this in the next meeting, or the meeting after that."
