Willard E. Baier (pronounced buyer) was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 30, 1902 and came to Southern California in the early 1920s. He joined Sunkist Growers, Inc., at that time known as the California Fruit Grower’s Exchange, in 1923 in San Dimas as a chemist. He moved to Ontario in 1926 when a new Sunkist plant opened there, known as Exchange Orange Products, which produced citrus by-products such as orange and lemon oils, pectin, and citric acid. In his interview, Mr. Baier discusses at length his career with Sunkist, the products manufactured at the Ontario plant, the international market for citrus products, his tenure as plant superintendent and as director of research, and other aspects of the industry. He also discusses his family, local people he has known in Ontario, and reminisces about early local industry, businesses, and events.
