Description
Caucasian male, born May 26, 1918 in Visalia, California. He has spent most of his life in Sacramento and had many Nisei friends. He attended local public schools and Stanford University. At age 24, Coombs went to Minidoka Relocation Center, Idaho as a high school teacher (1942-1944). Faculty included missionaries to Asia, members of religious orders, even some who had never seen Asians. Faculty lived in quarters similar to those of internees
he grew flowers outside the classroom. He left Minidoka in 1944 due to poor health and returned to Sacramento. He taught in local schools until 1978. He married a fellow Minidoka teacher, Margaret Askew
they had three children.
