Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this interview, Clark Jones was Bridge Maintenance Supervisor for Caltrans at the San Leandro Maintenance Station. As a Bridge Maintenance Supervisor, Jones was responsible for visually inspecting bridges and maintenance. When the Loma Prieta Earthquake happened, he was at home in Livermore, CA, getting ready to watch the World Series, and even before the earthquake was over, Jones went to his Caltrans Truck to get on the radio to learn where the damage was and he drove to the San Leandro Maintenance Yard. After the earthquake, Jones coordinated with all bridge supervisors to make sure that all bridge repairs were done. Jones also inspected many of the bridges in the Bay Area and spent significant time at the Cypress Structure.
