Description
Among the biographical highlights of Weisburd’s life was his role as one of the first LSD test subjects in the 1950s. His article entitled “Lysergic Acid and the Creative Experience” appeared first in Coastlines and then was reprinted in 1958’s Best Articles and Stories, making him perhaps the first literary figure to publish an account of the drug. He was the first among his peers to experiment, under doctor supervision, with the drug. He is a proponent of its use for artistic reasons, but also worried about the long term effects.
00:08-03:30 (pt. 1):
Recording begins in the midst of a poetry reading with Bert Meyers, reading an unidentified poem.
03:45-08:10:
Reading a short play, “Down in old don’t-care-a-damn-a”
08:11-10:24:
“and now to conclude, something called ‘so near’”
10:25-15:37:
Mel’s reflection on his latest LSD experience.
“…things. Not things that did not exist, but things as they existed in their…well…(chuckles) celestial light is the way I think Wordsworth puts it. But whatever words it is, ‘celestial’ is something larger than the way we ordinarily see things within the honeycombs of our own existence. Which continuously narrows as we grow older and limit, kill or destroy whatever sensitivities that we may want to develop naturally by ourselves.”
Driving through LA in a car with Dr. Corngall? (Korngold?), he recounts his experiences and feelings. He decides to stop recording after 5 minutes.
15:38-23:14:
A couple hours later, after eating, he begins again. He seem slightly out of breath. He notes that he experienced a sense of relief and more importantly acceptance. Of being accepted, and protected by a divine order.
Ends abruptly.
