Description
This is Patricia Bulitt on April 27th 1994 in Berkeley. The program began in city of Daly City, through the Daly City Recreation Program and produced oral histories in Chinese, Filipino, and African Haitian Dance. An exhibition, dancing/words/talking-An exhibition of photographs, poetry and excerpts from oral histories celebrating the traditions was produced from the Daly City project with photographer, Gary Sinick of Oakland, CA The tapes from this collection have been submitted to UC Berkeley in the first batch delivered to the library. All programs were funded through independent grants with co sponsorship from City of Daly City and City of Berkeley Recreation Programs given in after school programs.
The program provided free dance classes for elementary school aged youth in North and South Berkeley, provided master classes with master dancers, produced annual dance concerts featuring the professional dance artist/ teacher with the classes. Each year the location would shift from Live Oak Center, in Live Oak Park, in North Berkeley to South Berkeley's Francess Albrier Center, located in San Pablo Park. In addition, Patricia Bulitt offered family workshops in storytelling at both centers.
The storytelling sessions engaged families and youth to tell about their neighborhoods. This program provided focus on dance into the after school program where there had been no dance activities.
All of the dance artists serving as teachers participated in the oral history interviews. Whenever possible, dancers residing in the Bay Area or who might be visitors to the bay area, but born in the country of origin, were also interviewed. For instance, Shannon Yip in the
Number of Tapes to be presented to the existing collection. And, Ava Miller (sp?) was interviewed in this recording.
