Description
Kibei male, born on April 29, 1920 in Portland, Oregon to hotel keepers. In December 1921, when Kazuo was one and a half years old, his parents took him and a sister to Japan. In 1936 the sister married a visiting Japanese farmer from California who returned to the U.S. with his bride and sixteen year old Kazuo. Kazuo worked as a farm laborer, than as a houseboy for Dr. and Mrs. Bell of Tacoma, Washington who treated him as a son. He enrolled in local schools to learn English. In February 1942, at age twenty-two, he was drafted by the U.S. Army while his sister in California was evacuated to Tule Lake, California and his parents were in Japan. Kazuo had a variety of military assignments in the United States, Italy, Japan and Hawaii. He rose from the rank of private to first lieutenant by the time he was discharged. He joined the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in Italy but left in 1945 to join the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). He graduated from Language School at Fort Snelling, Minnesota in 1946 and served as interpreter and translator from 1947 to 1949 in Japan. After resigning his commission he worked in Defense and Military Intelligence from 1957 to 1967 in Tokyo and Honolulu. He earned his Bachelor�s and Master�s degrees at the University of Iowa and Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Washington. He was a professor in the Department of Geography at California State University, Sacramento from 1970 to 1990.
