This portrait of August "Gus" Sohlke signed on back in pencil "To Mr. Morrisey my friend and wellwisher, success to you, A. Sohlke". Sohlke was a vaudeville producer, director and musical number creator. He worked on the Ziegfeld Follies, the original Broadway production of "Hanky Panky". Photograph taken by Frederick Bushnell, likely while Sohlke was in the San Francisco Bay Area for a performance. Founder of one of the major West Coast photographic studio chains, Bushnell was originally an employee of Theodore C. Marceau. Bushnell established a chain of franchises, hiring photographers for the San Francisco studio, training them, and setting them up in various West Coast cities.
