Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The broadcast script for this date has not survived.
Reel 1:
Segment 1 (sound): California gubernatorial candidate Ronald Reagan at a press conference, responding to a question about Alan Cranston's report on the John Birch Society. "Very frankly, I thought that Mr. Cranston's 26 pages was quite a talented piece of writing, but mainly a propaganda piece that I think appealed to prejudice itself, that tried to divide Americans along every kind of line, and frankly I'm not qualified to say whether Mr. Cranston presented evidence that proves one way or another in trying to link the very people that I disapprove of -- these racists and bigots -- with this organization [John Birch Society]. But I tell you something here -- I would like to" [cut off]
Segment 2 (silent): Site of a car crash on a railroad crossing. Shots of a crumpled automobile, railroad tracks, railroad crossing sign with lights flashing, train passing by, a Sunrise Valley real estate sign in the background, police at site.
Segment 3 (silent): Night scene of car crash. Police are on the scene, as are firefighters hosing down the interior of the car.
Segment 4 (silent): NASA rocket with mannequin astronaut inside. Appears to be shot inside a test laboratory, includes shots of the interior control panels.
Segment 5 (silent): Exterior shots of the Rosicrucian Order complex in San Jose, including the exterior of a building with the organization's name on it, plinth, sphinx statue, mural, and fountain.
Reel 2 (silent + sound): Shot of the exterior of the County of Santa Cruz General Hospital, interior shots of nurses at work. Interview by Dennis Rowedder with doctor outside the building. Reporter: "Has the Board of Supervisors refused to give a pay increase?" "No, they have not refused at all. But they have been waiting for the dust to settle in the Bay Area where all the activity has been going on, and the nurses have been resigning, or have submitted resignations, and they feel that they can't be the first to give a raise when nothing has been settled yet. There are 33 hospitals in the Bay Area that have given interim increases, and a fact-finding committee is being appointed by the governor - the State Governor Brown -- and meantime the nurses have not resigned, and are working under these conditions, under this interim agreement." Reporter: "Now, doctor, if your nurses do resign, what sort of situation will this create in your hospital?" "We will have to close down our General Hospital, that is, our acute wards, our medical and surgical wards, and our outpatient department."
Reel 3:
Segment 1 (sound): Interview with man regarding the light airplane crash on August 4th. "I felt in the best interests of the citizens and taxpayers of San Jose, and Santa Clara County, who use San Jose Municipal Airport, that we should wait for a report from the FAA to find out if there was any negligence on the part of Cardinal Airways operating from San Jose Airport." Reporter: "Do you suspect that there was negligence?" "All indications seem to show that there was some negligence, but we're not sure yet. We have to wait for the final report from the FAA." Reporter: "How long do you think it will be before you get a report?" "I would say within the next week or two weeks." Reporter: "Steve, Cardinal Airways has had 3 crashes in the past year, and two of these have been in the past, what, 2 months? Do you see any connection between these and a charge of negligence against the airline?" "Well, let me just say this. There sure as hell is something wrong when something happens in a year and a half to have 3 accidents and somebody had better do something about it this is why I called a special commission meeting."
Segment 2 (sound): San Jose City Councilperson Joseph Pace interviewed outside a residence. "...when there's flagrant abuse of the rights of operators at our airport, I think we have a responsibility to our citizens to do everything we can to make sure that regulations are lived up to. In spite of that we'll still have accidents. But I happened to be up yesterday up on top of Mt. Umunhum at 7 o'clock in the morning, and I could see how the valley was socked in. We have -- maybe a lot of people don't know about it -- but we have a very sophisticated gear and electronic apparatuses at our airport for landing under [?] purposes, yet this landing yesterday was fortunate they made it the way they did, but it was a long ways away from the ILS approach. There are electronic aids to make instrument landings under proper conditions very safe, but not the type of operation yesterday. And then of course to run out of gas apparently, and not even have enough gas to go to an alternate airport.. it's very difficult to appreciate this. So I can't see anything we can do but to suspend our operations until either they can clear themselves with the public, or if they can't clear themselves, then I think maybe they'll have to find someone else."
