Description
This image features kites created by the artist Jackie Matisse (b. 1931) and is one of a series of interior installation views documenting the exhibition “Art that Soars – Kites and Tails by Jackie Matisse,” organized by Mingei International Museum that took place April 25 - November 26, 2000. Jackie Matisse often constructed her kites and tails with ordinary materials – aluminum, rayon, cellophane, crepe paper and spinnaker cloth. She launched kites under water and in the air. Jackie Matisse is one of seven artists to sign the international Art Volant (Flying Art) Manifesto, a declaration that views the kite as a vehicle “which speaks of the joining of the spirit and the physical.” The exhibition, funded in part by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Program, was curated by Director Martha Longenecker (tenure, 1974 – 2005) in collaboration with the artist. It was accompanied by a video and a 121-page publication that included essays by Jackie Matisse, Martha Longenecker, Leslie Vallhonrat, Rebecca Rickman, Marie-Louise Von Plessen, Anne d’Harnoncourt, Niki de Saint Phalle, Merce Cunningham, Ecke Bonk and Molly Nesbit.
