Description
This collection of photographs provides glimpses of the Saint Patrick's Presentation Convent (the former McLaughlin Mansion) in San Jose, California, both before and after its donation to Saint Patrick's Parish, and of the generous benefactor, Edward McLaughlin, his wife, Adelia Hickman McLaughlin, and guests in their home. Edward McLaughlin was a pioneer banker and Catholic convert. He lived in a spacious Victorian mansion built sometime during the 1850s-1860s, complete with an elaborate private chapel, on Seventh and Reed Streets in San Jose, California. Upon his death, the mansion was donated to Saint Patrick's Parish. In 1925, the Parish converted the mansion into a convent for the Sisters of the Presentation, San Francisco who came to San Jose at the request of Father Richard Collins, the pastor, to teach at the newly erected, St. Patrick School. The Sisters resided at that convent until 1963 when a new convent was built. The old convent was burned down by vandals in 1964.
