Description
Part 1: Max Freedman discusses a civil rights bill initially proposed by President Kennedy and continued by President Johnson. President Johnson was friends with President Kennedy and a well-equipped vice president to take over after President Kennedy’s assassination. The last 3 minutes take place at a Pomona College Forum: College graduates earn more money than non-college graduates, so the government earns money off the college graduates through income tax. The opportunity for a college education must become a right, not a privilege, so the audience should support adoption of affirmative proposal. Part 2: Dr. Norris E. Bradbury's discussion centers around those Americans who have access to a college education. College graduates must deal with technological complexity and the rise of human needs and aspirations. With the atomic bomb the role of science in society changed leading to the Cold War and the Space Age, and while space is fascinating, it doesn’t solve problems on Earth. An increased dependence on technology, and a growing population with longer life spans lead to fewer jobs. Higher education must teach students about man and communication and an understanding of science. The discussion concludes with distinctions drawn between liberal arts colleges like Pomona College and larger universities. Audio Notes: Part 1 has no audio until 00:20
