Irregular bulletin no. 50, The Gloria Issue (1961). This expanded edition is the largest Irregular bulletin issue to be published, encompassing the years 1959, 1960, and 1961, and comprised of over 400 pages. This issue is unique in that it gives a rough outline of Sister Magdalen Mary, IHM and Corita’s (Sister Mary Corita, IHM) 1959-1960 trip to Europe, which started in New York City. From November 1959 to January 1960, the pair traveled to numerous cities within France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Spain taking over 8,000 photographs and purchasing hundreds of pounds of art, which were all shipped back to the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College. Forming the foundation of the Gloria Art Folk Collection, these items included painting, sculpture, puppetry, camel saddles, and more. Published by the Fine Arts Department of the Immaculate Heart College between 1956 and 1963, the Irregular bulletin was a newsletter that announced the various activities and accomplishments of the students and faculty, including renowned artist, Corita (Sister Mary Corita, IHM), who was head of the department from 1964 to 1968]. There are a total of nine Irregular bulletin issues, which were published and numbered irregularly -- no. 1, no. 2, no. 4, no. 6, no. 8, no. 13, no. 14, no. 50, and the Last Irregular Bulletin (unnumbered). Initially comprised of a few pages of printed paper announcing departmental news, the bulletin quickly evolved into a more extended publication, with a distinct graphic style that in many ways presaged the formation of contemporary zines. Later issues were printed by Rapid Blue Print Company, a local printer in Los Angeles, and featured abundant photography and reproductions of artworks by faculty and students. The issues include documentation of notable Los Angeles figures that visited and/or lectured at the school such as Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, and John Cage. The bulletins sometimes included course descriptions for upcoming school years, local Los Angeles gallery and museum exhibition listings, arts and humanities related press clippings, and advertisements for local businesses. Edited by Sister Magdalen Mary and produced with the help of Corita, the bulletin became highly regarded for its innovative presentation. The Irregular bulletin was collected and purchased by individuals and institutions inside and outside of the Immaculate Heart College, giving the department the unique opportunity to gain a widespread readership. In 1980, the Immaculate Heart College would publish another publication called “The Happy Ending”, in the spirit of the Irregular bulletin, as a closing chapter to the Immaculate Heart College.
