Description
This program is about seniors who live in Southern California. First profile: Ben Mayer, who emigrated to America decades ago, is now a retired businessman and grandfather who also happens to be an inventor, author, volunteer teacher and a noted amateur astronomer. While “playing in the heavens” he accidently filmed professional astronomers. Ben teaches the wonders of the heavens to immigrant children who are bused to the Newcomers School in Bel Air. None of the students speak English, but Ben’s fluency in several languages and the love he displays toward both students and astronomy make his lessons easily understood. Second profile: George and Hope LaPiana, aged 82 and 77 respectively, run an after-school chess class for about 30 Carson students. Part 3: Nan Sherman, an extensively published poet, writes frequently on the aspects of aging. In poems used throughout the half-hour, Sherman: remembers her first lead role as a 10 year-old actress
winces over the fleeting passage of time and envies the physical beauty of a much younger poet.
