Description
This business card from the Leopold Justi Papers provides documentation of the A. Mitchell, Poultry and Game, Santa Rosa. Leopold W. Justi (1864-1946) was a longtime resident of Glen Ellen, in Sonoma County. He was a farmer, winemaker, justice of the peace, and an insurance agent. As a winemaker he helped develop a phylloxera resistant grapevine. He performed so many wedding ceremonies that he earned the nickname "the marrying magistrate," and among the many people he joined in marriage was the nephew of famed Sonoma County writer Jack London. His insurance clients included the sister and the widow of Jack London, as well as other prominent county residents and organizations. He was also involved in the development of local schools.
