Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The broadcast script for this date has not survived.
Reel 1:
Segment 1 (silent + sound): Foggy highway in Santa Cruz County or Monterey County. A bearded man with glasses hanging from his neck is walking along a path next to the highway. He stops and looks down at the highway from an overpass. KNTV reporter Dennis Rowedder interviews him. "Well, it seems to me that one of the basic heritages we have is the right, privilege, of walking upon the earth. With the present, vast highway setup it's almost impossible to go from community to community without endangering your life, or at least to have a very definite harassment of the sounds of traffic, and certainly a lack of what we would call any mood of a simple, natural or rural environment. It seems to me that the movement that is forming here now has a very great objective view, which is to suggest and implement a series of trails connecting the various communities, say Carmel, Carmel Valley, Monterey, Pacific Grove, through a system of walking and bicycling trails which, in the main, will take the individual away from the main stream of traffic. Just how this is to be done.." [cuts off]
Segment 2 (silent): Sign reading, "Gas Storage Helium Bldg. No. 4." Shots of a large gas storage tank, rigging and ladders. Men being lifted up in the mouth of a digger. Moffett Field Hangar One, pile of ordnances being covered with dirt by the digger.
Segment 3 (silent): Man at podium speaking at a Rotary event.
Reel 2:
Segment 1 (sound): Brief shots of coroner's team bringing bodies out of the house at 349 Marylinn Drive in Milpitas after the murder-suicide [also covered in previous day's news]. Interview with the Milpitas Chief of Police. Reporter: "Are there any indications that the murder-suicides have any connection whatsoever with the crimes in Illinois and Texas?" "As far as we can determine, no. There are no newspapers in the home at all, and nothing in the house would indicate there was any knowledge of the case in Texas." Reporter: "You were perhaps looking for some evidence that she had read these crimes and then committed the one on her own?" "Yes, we were. We looked the house over shortly after we arrived and we could find no newspapers at all." Reporter: "Someone from your department said last night it was a very strong rumor that Mrs. Ewart had been confined to a state mental hospital. Can you tell us anything about that?" "Yes, their records indicate a voluntary commitment in May and June of this year, a total of slightly over 4 weeks." Reporter: "Were there any indications at all to your department of any problems with Mrs. Ewart, any emotional problems, family problems?" "No, not at all. The police have never been called in to the home at all." Reporter: "The family minister was at the scene last night, and he indicated rather sketchily that he had been speaking with Mrs. Ewart over the past week about some problems. Do you have any information concerning that?" "As far as we know, that was simply her reaching a situation of putting her children into a summer Bible class." Reporter: "But other than that, no family or other emotional problems?" No, none at all." Reporter: "Have you talked with him about this?" "Yes." [cut off]
Segment 2 (sound): Interview with man wearing glasses. Reporter: "How binding will the decisions of this fact-finding committee be once the resolutions and decisions are handed down on December 1st?" "Well, the California Nurses Association and the representatives of the three hospitals have agreed in good faith to accept the recommendations of the fact-finding committee." Reporter: "Do you imagine that this will be only a further term of staving off the walkout for a short period of time, or will it ultimately solve the situation?" "I feel that this is the approach to solving the problems between the two parties." Reporter: "What will be the result of a pay hike for the employees? Will the rates for the Kaiser plan go up? Will hospital rates go up as a result?" "Yes, speaking in terms of the Kaiser plan, the Kaiser Foundation plan rates will be adjusted upward, as is true in all hospitals. Rates -- charges to patients -- will have to reflect any increase in costs, and nurses salaries, being a major portion of hospitals' costs, will certainly bring this about." Reporter: "Once the situation has been resolved, do you think this will be the final resolution of the problem, or will it come up again in the near future?" "We anticipate that the resolutions of the fact-finding body will provide for a pattern for wages at least for a period into the future, and we hope that this approach will be a pattern for future consideration between the organizations involved." Reporter: "Why has this happened now rather than last year or the year before?" "This is one I don't know the answer to. I think the whole framework of interest in salaries is a nationwide interest, and this is one of the hospitals' major concerns, that any agreement that is reached in this area will be reflected nationwide, and this is why the interest in having a public fact-finding body to represent the public interest is a predominate one."
