Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this interview Deborah Kunin was a Dispatcher Supervisor with Caltrans at Sacramento Headquarters. When the Loma Prieta earthquake happened she was in her office, and had never experienced an earthquake before and was shaken up from the experience. She left work briefly, but returned after seeing on the television the damage to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and returned to her office. In the days after the earthquake, Kunin worked long hours to gather information to be disseminated by California Highway Information Network (CHIN) and Caltrans Highway Information Broadcasters’ Network (CHIBN). In the interview she goes into detail about the successes and challenges doing this after the earthquake and offers some suggestions of what she would like to have changed before the next major earthquake.
